Yule refers to pagan feasts during the Germanic winter solstice. They involved the giving of gifts, festive gifts, decorated trees and coloured lights to ward off evil spirits. Live evergreen trees were often brought into homes during a harsh winter as a reminder to the inhabitants that soon their crops would grow again......

It's Christmas Eve and the villagers are braving the weather to buy last minute present and culinary treats for their Christmas dinner. The festive lights sparkle across the street and there is excitement in the air. As people stop to chat to one another many can't resist a handful of roasted chestnuts and a glass of warming mulled wine.
